Vicino a Lucca, un ponte diabolico attraversa l'acqua. Il Ponte della Maddalena, come viene chiamato ufficialmente il ponte, fu costruito intorno al 1100 per ordine di Matilde di Canossa, vicino alla frazione di Borgo a Mozzano. Il ponte fu fonte di ispirazione per Dante; sarebbe stato il modello per il ponte di roccia che il poeta italiano descrive nell'ottava cerchia di Inferno.
Il soprannome Ponte del Diavolo, Devil
's Bridge, tuttavia, non deve il ponte a Dante. L'origine di questo nome risale al tempo in cui fu costruito il ponte. Il muratore incaricato di questo compito era preoccupato per la lentezza con cui procedeva la costruzione.

Near Lucca, an evil bridge crosses the water. The Ponte della Maddalena, as the bridge is officially called, was built around 1100 by order of Matilde di Canossa, near the hamlet of Borgo a Mozzano. The bridge was a source of inspiration for Dante; it would have been the model for the rock bridge that the Italian poet describes in the eighth circle of Inferno.
The nickname Ponte del Diavolo, Devil's Bridge, however, does not owe the bridge to Dante. The origin of this name dates back to the time when the bridge was built. The bricklayer in charge of this task was concerned about the slowness with which the construction proceeded.
It had to be faster, but that was not humanly possible. That's why he made a deal with the devil. The bridge would be completed within one night provided that the first soul who crossed the bridge would belong to the devil. The bricklayer agreed, but he informed the village pastor so that none of his fellow parishioners would cross the bridge and fall into the hands of the devil.
