SAN GALGANO

Tra i tanti borghi medievali della Toscana non possono mancare  le maestose rovine dell’Abbazia di San Galgano, sede di uno tra i più importanti monasteri toscani. Questo sito include due punti di attrazione: l’Abbazia, con un’enorme chiesa che oggi si presenta senza tetto, e l’Eremo di Montesiepi, che intreccia la sua storia alla leggenda di San Galgano e la sua “spada nella roccia”.

Si sa di San Galgano che fu un giovane nobile che nel XII secolo si convertì e rinunciò alle proprie ricchezze . Fece costruire nel 1181 una cappella sul Monte Siepi, dove scelse di morire da eremita. Proclamato santo già pochi anni dopo, i monaci dell’ordine costruirono successivamente un oratorio e un edificio in suo onore. È così che prese vita il Monastero di San Galgano, magnifico edificio del quale oggi non sono rimaste che le mura.

Il vicino Eremo di Montesiepi è noto per l’unica spada nella roccia conosciuta al mondo. Si tratta di una spada che sarebbe appartenuta proprio a San Galgano, il quale, decidendo di diventare eremita, la infisse nella roccia come gesto di pace.

Il vicino Chiusdino merita pure una visita per il museo dedicato e i suoi murales.

Among the many medieval villages of Tuscany  you cannot miss the majestic ruins of the Abbey of San Galgano, home to one of the most important Tuscan monasteries. This site includes two points of attraction: the Abbey, with a huge church that now stands without a roof, and the Hermitage of Montesiepi, which intertwines its history to the legend of San Galgano and his "sword in the rock".

We know of San Galgano who was a young nobleman who in the twelfth century converted and gave up his wealth . He built a chapel on Mount Siepi in 1181, where he chose to die as a hermit. Proclaimed a saint already a few years later, the monks of the order built successively an oratory and a building in his honor. This is how the Monastery of San Galgano came to life, a magnificent building of which today only the walls remain.

The nearby Hermitage of Montesiepi is known for the only rock sword known in the world. It is a sword that would have belonged to San Galgano, who, deciding to become a hermit, stuck it in the rock as a gesture of peace.

The nearby Chiusdino is also worth a visit for its dedicated museum and its murals.
