Ponte dell catene Bagni di Lucca 

Venne edificato dal 1844 al 1860 su commissione del duca di Lucca Carlo Ludovico di Borbone e progetto di Lorenzo Nottolini. Si trattava di un'opera avveniristica per l'epoca. Il Duca la impose letteralmente al proprio architetto regio che, prima di redigere il progetto, dovette visitare personalmente simili architetture realizzate in Inghilterra. L'opera si basa sull'innovativo uso delle tecniche industriali del ferro, tramite la sospensione con le catene, e su un complesso meccanismo sotterraneo che tiene in tensione le catene stesse. Ciò non impedì tuttavia di disegnare un'opera che rispondesse ai criteri estetici del classicismo allora dominante, con i due archi di trionfo che si trovano alle estremità del ponte. La data di inizio dei lavori ne fa uno dei più antichi ponti in ferro dell'Europa continentale ancora esistenti. Il ponte delle Catene di Budapest fu iniziato negli stessi anni e terminato nel 1849. A Kiev, in Ucraina un ponte simile (Ponte Nicola) venne costruito sul Dnipro a partire dal 1848. Nel confinante Granducato di Toscana un ponte sospeso in ferro fu fatto realizzare al parco delle Cascine di Firenze dal Granduca Leopoldo, ma oggi esso non esiste più.

It was built from 1844 to 1860 on commission from the duke of Lucca Carlo Ludovico di Borbone and designed by Lorenzo Nottolini. It was a futuristic work for the time. The Duke literally imposed it on his royal architect who, before drafting the project, had to personally visit similar architectures made in England. The work is based on the innovative use of industrial iron techniques, through suspension with chains, and on a complex underground mechanism that keeps chains themselves under tension. However, this did not prevent the design of a work that met the aesthetic criteria of the then dominant classicism, with the two triumphal arches located at the ends of the bridge. The starting date of the works makes it one of the oldest still existing continental European iron bridges. The Budapest Chain Bridge was started in the same years and finished in 1849. In Kiev, Ukraine a similar bridge (Nicola Bridge) was built on the Dnipro starting from 1848. In the neighboring Grand Duchy of Tuscany an iron suspension bridge was built to the Cascine park in Florence by the Grand Duke Leopold, but today it no longer exists.
