L’Orrido di Botri è una spettacolare gola calcarea alle pendici dei monti Rondinaio e Tre Potenze con ripide pareti scavate in profondità dalle fredde acque dei torrenti Mariana e Ribellino, che si congiungono poi formando il Rio Pelago.
Nel periodo estivo, quando la portata delle acque è minore e la temperatura un po’ più mite, è possibile risalirne il tratto finale, da Ponte a Gaio fino alla Piscina.
Al suo interno la vegetazione è distribuita secondo una stratificazione verticale, con i livelli più umidi e freddi alla base dove predominano i muschi e le felci, sostituiti mano a mano che si sale verso l’alto dai livelli più temperati, dove si incontrano piante di aquilegia e silene in mezzo ad estese faggete.
Le impervie pareti dell’Orrido arrivano in alcuni punti fino a 200 m. di altezza, e da sempre costituiscono un sito di nidificazione ideale per l’Aquila Reale.
Le visite partono da Ponte a Gaio, unico accesso alla gola, dove si trova il centro accoglienza dei Carabinieri Forestali e la biglietteria.
A causa dei frequenti guadi e del fondo scivoloso, è obbligatorio l'uso del casco protettivo e sono obbligatorie scarpe da trekking. Per la tutela dell'ambiente naturale e per l'incolumità degli escursionisti, la Riserva è aperta da giugno a settembre, in altri periodi è vietato l'accesso.
Non è consentito l'accesso agli animali.
The Orrido di Botri is a spectacular limestone gorge on the slopes of the Rondinaio and Tre Potenze mountains with steep walls deeply dug by the cold waters of the Mariana and Ribellino streams, which then join to form the Rio Pelago.
In the summer, when the flow of the water is lower and the temperature a little milder, it is possible to go up the final stretch, from Ponte a Gaio to the swimming pool.
Inside, the vegetation is distributed according to a vertical stratification, with the wettest and coldest levels at the base where mosses and ferns predominate, replaced as you climb upwards from the more temperate levels, where plants of aquilegia and silene in the midst of extensive beech woods.
The impervious walls of the Orrido reach in some places up to 200 m. tall, and have always been an ideal nesting site for the Golden Eagle.
The visits start from Ponte a Gaio, the only access to the gorge, where the Forest Carabinieri reception center and the ticket office are located.
Due to frequent fords and slippery surfaces, the use of a protective helmet is mandatory and trekking shoes are mandatory. For the protection of the natural environment and for the safety of hikers, the Reserve is open from June to September, in other periods access is forbidden.
Animals are not allowed.
